A lot of people have already mentioned a number of techniques to learn new words . I will tell you here what I did and let me tell you that it has worked very well for me. I studied in a Hindi medium school till 10th standard and my vocabulary was quite limited before I entered college. After joining the college, I started to feel the need to work on improving my vocabulary and that was one of the few things I sincerely did during the four years of my engineering. I had the good fortune to study under one of the best English teachers I’ve ever known-Professor PJ Phillips. He advised each one of us to make a small investment and buy a copy of Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary. During my college days, I used to refer to it so often that by the time I got out of college, I had almost destroyed this dictionary. I used to read it in spare time and make notes in a diary. My experience has been that a hard diary is always better than a soft one(electronic). I’d write in the diary the word, its pronunciation, a sentence or two of correct usage and any other related information from the dictionary.

As is the case with a lot of people, I, too, began with Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis. It is a very good book and it took me around a month to finish and revise it. After completing it I also read All About Words by Maxwell Nurnberg and Morris Rosenblum. These books not just significantly improved my vocabulary but also developed a love and curiosity for new words in me. Almost every day, I used to read a newspaper and note down all new words in my diary. Every now and then, I’d revise all words noted in the diary and try using these words in my day to day conversations/writings.

Next step in this direction was to learn the word list from Barron’s GRE. This book turned out to be quite a difficult one as there was hardly anything in the book that could make learning fun. But it provided me with a challenge. Around this time I started using flashcards and I must say that I’ve been immensely benefited by these flash cards.I kept on doing all these things till the final year of my graduation. And when I sat for the campus placement exam, I was able to sail through(in fact top) the written test mainly because of the newly acquired word power.

Building vocabulary is an ever-going process. You have to develop the love and penchant for new words. However, mere learning of meaning of a word is not sufficient. Once you know the meaning of a word, the most important step is to use it in your own sentences. Somebody has rightly said that in order to make a word yours you should write and speak three sentences using it. A good vocabulary helps you immensely but if you want to feel the power of words, you have to have a large active vocabulary and that’s possible when you immerse yourself in the world of words. Read, speak, listen to as much of English as you can. Develop the habit of reading. You’ll acquire not just words but ideas for life.

Lastly, I have always believed that perseverance and hard work are two of the greatest virtues. If you can follow the ideas I’ve mentioned in my answer, you will see a perceptible improvement in your vocabulary.Good Luck, Learner!!!
