• RIGHT: I’ve never really liked team sports (for example, football, basketball, soccer).
• WRONG: I’ve never really liked team sports (in other words, football, basketball, soccer).

Luxury clothing stores (e.g., Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Prada) are known for their high prices.

• RIGHT: Luxury clothing stores (for example, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Prada) are known for their high prices.
• WRONG: Luxury clothing stores (in other words, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Prada) are known for their high prices.

i.e. means “in other words.”

Despite early optimism, the new technology turned out to be a net negative (i.e., it cost us more time than it saved us).

• RIGHT: Despite early optimism, the new technology turned out to be a net negative (in other words, it cost us more time than it saved us).
• WRONG: Despite early optimism, the new technology turned out to be a net negative (for example, it cost us more time than it saved us).

Recent studies of American women have revealed that, in any given year, 2% (i.e., 1 out of every 50) will get an abortion.

• RIGHT: Recent studies of American women have revealed that, in any given year, 2% (in other words, 1 out of every 50) will get an abortion.
• WRONG: Recent studies of American women have revealed that, in any given year, 2% (for example, 1 out of every 50) will get an abortion.

Rule of Thumb: “E.g.” should be replaceable with “for example.” I.e. should be replaceable with “in other words.”

How to Remember:

Here’s a little trick that I use to remember the difference:

• e.g. is for an example, because it starts with an “e”
  Alternatively: e.g. means “example given.”
• i.e. means in other words, because it starts with an “i”
  Alternatively: i.e. means “in essence.”

Note: e.g. and i.e. are actually latin abbreviations. They don’t actually mean “example given” and “in essence.”

Where to Use a Comma with i.e. and e.g.

There is no clear consensus on this. However, the most popular opinion is to use a comma after i.e. and e.g., as shown in the earlier examples.
