Order of adjectives  What are adjectives?

Adjectives are part of speech which describe nouns or pronouns in a sentence.

It is possible to use two or more adjectives to describe one noun and when that happens there are specific rules as to in which order the adjectives are used.

Order of adjectives  Order of adjectives – two adjectives

We often have two adjectives in front of a noun:

a nice young woman
a
friendly big black dog
a
lovely old building
a wonderful sunny day

When we have two or more adjectives, the adjectives expressing opinion come before adjectives describing any physical qualities of the noun, so in the examples below we first say “nice” which expresses our subjective opinion of a “woman”. “Young” describes physical or “objective” quality of the woman.

The order of adjectives generally follows this pattern. If you have two adjectives describing opinion, the general opinion comes before the specific opinion.

Adjectives which give a general opinion, include the ones below. They can be used to describe any noun (person or thing).

good
bad
lovely
strange
great
nice
beautiful
brilliant
excellent
amazing
awful
important
wonderful
nasty
horrible
dreadful

For example:

  • We have many good / lovely / awful teachers in our school.
  • It was a nice / lovely / horrible meal.

Adjectives which give a specific opinion describe a particular quality, depending on the noun they describe, such as food, buildings or people.

Food: tasty, delicious, nutritious
Buildings, furniture: comfortable, uncomfortable
People, animals: friendly, intelligent

We usually put an opinion adjective in front of a descriptive adjective:

For Example:

  • a comfortable blue suit.
  • a horrible old witch.
  • the wonderful Italian pizza

Order of adjectives  Order of adjectives – three or more adjectives

It is very unusual to have more than three adjectives.

  1. General opinion
  2. Specific opinion
  3. Size
  4. Shape
  5. Age
  6. Colour
  7. Nationality
  8. Material

General opinion (nice, amazing, wonderful, horrible, bad)

Quality or specific opinion (tasty, friendly, comfortable)

Size (big, small, huge, tiny)

Shape (round, triangular, square)

Age (old, young, ancient, modern)

Colour (black, yellow, multicoloured)

Nationality, place of origin (British, South American, Western)

Material (leather, wooden, metal)

It is very unusual to have more than two or three adjectives before a noun, but here there are some examples of such combinations:

  • A comfortable new velvet dress.
  • A lovely old ceramic coffee mug.
  • A delicious home-made Italian pizza.
  • A pair of amazing black Italian leather boots.
  • A horrible old discoloured wall.
  • A beautiful red Japanese silk blouse.
  • A disgusting old wooden kitchen table.
