Using HAS in the present tense or past tense?

‘Has’ is a verb in the present tense on any given day. Its past equivalent is ‘had’. Now to develop a clear understanding of ‘has’, it needs to be studied in both its avatars, as the main verb and as a helping verb. Observe:

Context one: main verb

As the main verb has implied possessing or owning something. Observe some examples:

  • He has a nice car.
  • Rita has a new job.
  • She has a polite manner of speaking.

The sentences illustrate that has as the main verb is used in the present tense and only along with He/She/It/Name, in the positive sentences. In the negative and interrogative sentences however, the same has will change to have. Observe:

Negative:

  • He doesn’t have a nice car.
  • Rita doesn’t have a new job.
  • She doesn’t have a polite manner of speaking.

Interrogative :

  • Does he have a nice car?
  • Does Rita have a new job?
  • Does she have a polite manner of speaking?

Now let’s have a look at ‘has’ as the auxiliary/helping verb:

Context two: Auxiliary verb

Has as an auxiliary/helping verb used in the present perfect tense with he/she/it

It is used when something occurred in the recent past and is still in action. Observe a sentence in all 3 forms.

  • She has taken up a new job. (She took up the job recently and still keeps it)
  • She hasn’t taken up a new job. (She didn’t take up the job and is still jobless)
  • Has she taken up a new job? (The speaker was unaware if she’s taken the job and still is.)

Now I do realize that the concept of helping verbs can be a bit ticklish, which is why I’m sharing my video here on Do/does/did/have/has/had. Hope it helps. Best wishes! 🙂

I to London to visit the Queen of England. Being a clever fellow, I myself as a prince and walk into Buckingham Palace as if I owned it. After receiving directions from a chambermaid, I into the Queen's bedroom and surprise Her Royal Highness with a hearty slap on the back. Then, of course, I my hat, bow, and deliver the usual compliments. After uncorking a bottle of champagne, we pleasantries and talk about our families for more than an hour. I her my photograph album and my stamp collection, and she me her historic collection of jewels. After a thoroughly entertaining visit, I email addresses with Her Majesty and then kiss her goodbye — on the fingertips of her white gloves, of course.
