Daily grammar lesson with Elo Kasia. What are adjectives? How to use adjectives? What are the most important adjectives to learn?

What Are Adjectives? Examples of Adjectives and Types of Adjectives  1. What are adjectives?

Adjectives are one of the four major word classes (parts of speech), along with nouns, verbs and adverbs. Examples of adjectives are: big, blue, old, rich, friendly, Italian.

They give us more information about people, animals or things represented by nouns and pronouns:

  • That’s a big bag.
  • Look at the blue sky.
  • It is an old house.
  • I have some rich relatives.
  • He’s a friendly dog.
  • She only wears Italian fashion.

Technically, an adjective is described as modifying or quantifying a noun or pronoun, but an easier to understand their function is to say that an adjective tells us more and gives us extra information about something.

For example, if someone said: “He’s a friendly dog”, the adjective friendly is giving us extra information about the noun dog.

What Are Adjectives? Examples of Adjectives and Types of Adjectives  2.  Adjectives Position – Where to Position an Adjective?

Normally, adjectives are positioned before the noun that they describe: a big bag, an old house, as in the examples above.

However, if a linking verb such as be or seem is used, the adjective becomes predicative and can be placed after the noun: the bag is big, the house seems old.

Here are also some adjectives which can only be used after a linking verb and cannot come before a noun. They include:

We use some adjectives only after a link verb (never before a noun):

afraid

alive

alone

asleep

content

glad

ill

ready

sorry

sure

unable

well

Some of the commonest –ed adjectives are normally used only after a link verb:

annoyed

bored

finished

pleased

interested

Look at these examples:

Kevin was alone in the house. but not Alone Kevin was afraid.

The meal is ready. but not The ready meal was on the table.

The students were interested in the topic. but not The interested students were listening to the lecture.

What Are Adjectives? Examples of Adjectives and Types of Adjectives  3. How to identify an adjective?

There is no general rule for making adjectives.

We know they are adjectives usually by what they do in a sentence (describe a noun or pronoun). However, some word endings (suffixes) are typical of adjectives, such as the ones below:

suffix

examples

-able, -ible
comfortable, readable, incredible, invisible

-al, -ial
comical, normal, musical, industrial, presidential

-ful
beautiful, harmful, peaceful, wonderful

-ic
classic, economic, heroic, romantic

-ical
aeronautical, alphabetical, political

-ish
British, childish, Irish, foolish

ive, –ative
active, alternative, creative, talkative

less
endless, motionless, priceless, timeless

eous, –ious, –ous
spontaneous, hideous, ambitious, anxious, dangerous, famous

-y
angry, busy, wealthy, windy

What Are Adjectives? Examples of Adjectives and Types of Adjectives  4.  Adjectives and opposites

Many adjectives come in pairs of opposites which makes them easier and more enjoyable to learn.

Some common examples are given below. That also means that if you don’t know an adjective it is OK to use its opposite with “not”. For example “difficult” – “It is not easy!” or “it is confusing” – “it is not clear.”

Most common adjectives are members of a pair of opposites (antonyms):

beautiful – ugly

dead – alive

happy – sad

rough – smooth

big – small

dry – wet

heavy – light

tall – short

cold – hot

good – bad

What Are Adjectives? Examples of Adjectives and Types of Adjectives  5. Prefixes in adjectives

You can also add a prefix (word chunks such as “un”, “in”, etc. which come at the beginning of a word) to change the meaning of an adjective. This usually happens with more complex adjectives and prefixes such as un-, in-, im-, il- and ir- . Adding these prefixes makes the meaning negative:

un-

in-

ir-

fair – unfair

active – inactive

responsible – irresponsible

happy – unhappy

appropriate – inappropriate

regular – irregular

sure – unsure

complete – incomplete

rational– irrational
