What is a noun?
Nouns make up the largest class of words in most languages, including English.
A noun is a word that refers to:
- a thing (book)
- a person (Christopher Jones)
- an animal (bear)
- a quality (softness)
- an idea (justice)
- an action (yodeling).
It is usually a singular word, but not always.cake, shoes, school, bus and time and a half are all nouns.
Some nouns are not count or mass nouns. Nouns which only refers to one thing are called singular nouns:
- “Saturn is the sixth planet of the sun”.
And plural nouns refers to more than one person or things or sometimes to something that has two main parts.
- “These knives are dull.”
Any member of a class of words that typically can be combined with determiners to serve as the subject of a verb, can interpreted as a singular or plural, can be replaced with a pronoun, and refers to an entity, quality, state, action, or concept.

What do Nouns do?
There are many definitions for “noun”with detail and brief explanations. But the best way to study about noun is to discuss what nouns does.
Here’s how to recognize nouns in a sentence and as well as more on what they do:
They come with articles
If noun follows “a” “an”or “the”it is probably a noun. If there is an adjective in there it will be between the article and the noun, so you have to ask yourself “ is this something I can touch, smell, feel, see? Or does it describe something I can feel, see, smell, touch, taste. It’s noun. If it is the latter it is probably adjective. Here we can understand the usage of a noun with adjective.
They are modified by adjectives
If something is described as young, beautiful, old, shiny, cold or something like that( all are addictive) so, it is probably a noun.
They act as subject
The subject of a sentence normally comes right before the verb. When you say “The leopard ate their kitten” in this sentence the leopard is the subject and it comes right before the verb(ate) subject can be consist of several words or just one word gerunds and infinitive verbs can also act like a subject in a sentence. There role is to serve the nouns why? because noun is acting as a subject.
Infinitive verbs
Infinitive verbs are mostly the verbs using “ to” with it.They can also act like a subject and can serve nouns. Because nouns acts as a subject.
They acts like objects and compliments
Compliments follow state of being verbs like “be” “seem” and “ become”.Objects follows the verb as well as preposition.”kishwar is a teacher”. The word teacher in a sentence is a compliment. “ Shane hugged a tutor” a tutor is an object.
In another sentence “ I’m sitting near a doctor “ the doctor is a prepositional object” in such cases doctor and tutor are a noun.
They are the names
All names of persons, animals, buildings, mountains, oceans, books, magazines, songs, things, etc are nouns
Nouns with gender
Nouns are mostly male and female. Here are few nouns that indicates masculinity or femininity:
- Father/ mother
- Boy/ girl
- Uncle/ aunt
- Actor/ actress
Nouns can be pluralized
Mostly in English nouns can be pluralized by adding an “s” but few more exceptions.
Nouns with singular forms ends in s, z,ch, they need to add “es” to become plural (e.g, boss/ bosses, watch/watches,box/boxes)
Certain nouns ends in “o” also needs”es” to the plural (e.g, tomato/tomatoes,volcano/volcanoes, hero/heroes)
For nouns that ends in “f”or “fe” change the f to av and add es ( e.g, knife /knives, wolf/wolves,)
If a singular noun ends in a single or double consonant followed by y change the y by es(e.g,lady/ladies, bully/bullies)
