There are three basic types of questions in English: direct, indirect, and question tags.

Direct and indirect questions are used to ask for information you do not know, while question tags are generally used to clarify or confirm the information you think you know.

Question tags are very popular in English and they are sometimes called “mini-questions.” Their meaning is close to “isn’t it true?”, “do you agree?”.

What is questions tags in English How to use QUESTION TAGS?

Forming question tags is very easy and is usually enjoyed by English learners.

The question tag uses the helping verb in the opposite form of the sentence itself.

In other words, if the sentence is positive, the question tag takes the negative form of the helping verb. If the sentence is negative, the question tag employs the positive form. Some examples of how we form question tags in most common tenses and expressions.

It is quite common for British people to start a conversation with “small talk” and this usually means talking about the weather. You are very likely to hear something like:

It’s a nice day today, isn’t it? – the main sentence is positive, so the question tag is negative. It isn’t a bad day today, is it? – main sentence negative, question tag positive.

Or, in the past:

  • The weather was lovely yesterday, wasn’t it?
  • Yesterday wasn’t as cold, was it?

Remember that with simple tenses (Present Simple, Past Simple) the helping verb is not there in the positive, but it has to be inserted in the question tag.

  • He works in a bank, DOESN’T he?
  • They go swimming every Tuesday, DON’T they?

If the sentence is negative, you just change the helping verb from negative to positive

  • Samantha doesn’t play football, does she?
  • We don’t drink before lunchtime, do we?

Similarly, in the past simple, the helping verb “did” is not there in the positive, but we can’t forget it in the tag. So,

  • They went out last night, didn’t they?
  • Khan bought these flowers for her, didn’t he?

If the sentence is negative, then we just swap the negative for positive.

  • They didn’t send us an invite, did they?
  • His mother didn’t come to the party, did she?

What is questions tags in English  How to form question Tags with other tenses and verb forms?

With other tenses and verb forms, we just change the negative into positive and the positive into negative.

Present Continuous

  • We are going shopping tomorrow, aren’t we?
  • We aren’t staying here, are we?

Past Continuous

  • She was wearing a white dress, wasn’t she?
  • They weren’t following us, were they?

Present Perfect

  • He has never been abroad before, has he?
  • They haven’t decided on the flat yet, have they?

Future Simple

  • Donna will help you, won’t she?
  • They won’t come, will they?

It is useful to know questions tags so that you can sound more natural in English. When you practise speaking some simple sentences, try changing them into tag questions, it is real fun.
