What is the difference between Present Simple and Present?
Question Time: What is the difference between Present Simple and Present Continuous?

As usual, I will try to explain the difference using simple language and plenty of examples.
Compare:
- Present Simple: What do you do? I am a teacher / write / nurse / mechanic / housewife. (This is a question about your job or occupation.)
- Present Continuous: What are you doing? I am washing the clothes / cleaning the windows / watering the plants / cooking dinner / painting the walls.
- I work in an office. (It is my permanent job)
- I’m working on a new project. (I am not working on the project at this particular moment, but around this time.)
- I read a lot of books. (habit)
- I’m reading ‘Oliver Twist’ this week. (activity in progress around now)
- I usually do the dishes after dinner. (routine)
- I’m not doing the dishes today. We are eating out.(future plans)
Some more examples:
- Mark studies English every day.
- Mark is studying the present continuous at the moment.
- We usually go to the supermarket on Saturdays.
- Right now, we’re going to the supermarket.
- They always talk to their boss in the morning.
- They’re talking to him now.
- Does it usually rain in the winter? No, but it’s raining now. Take an umbrella.
