The story in plain English
Italian roots in subtropical Brisbane
Merlo says its coffee story began in Brisbane in 1992 and grew from founder Dean Merlo’s Italian family heritage. Its history belongs to the wider influence of Italian migration on Australian espresso culture.
Brisbane adds a different setting to the national coffee story. Warm weather, outdoor tables and takeaway routines make iced coffee, cold brew and quick counter orders especially useful language topics.
A family story can explain influences, but it should not imply that one company created a city’s culture. Brisbane café life developed through many migrant communities, workers, businesses and customers.
Useful English
“Could I have an iced long black with a little milk, please?”
