Choose a coarse-ish grind
Many plunger guides start around coarse or medium-coarse. Your grinder and coffee can change the best setting.
If a recipe says French press and an Australian shop says coffee plunger, you are usually looking at the same type of brewer. The vocabulary difference is part of the lesson.

A coffee plunger, also called a French press, is an immersion brewer. Ground coffee and hot water steep together; a mesh plunger then separates most grounds from the drink. Australian retailers and coffee brands commonly use the word “plunger.”
The name French press is common internationally. In Australian shops, kitchens and coffee guides, coffee plunger is also very common. Some people simply say plunger: “We’ve got a plunger at the office.”
This is a useful ESL example because learning English in Australia is not only about grammar. It is also learning which everyday label you are likely to see locally.
Many plunger guides start around coarse or medium-coarse. Your grinder and coffee can change the best setting.
A scale makes repeating a good cup easier. Australian guides often use around 60–70 g coffee per litre as a starting area, then adjust for taste.
Four minutes is a familiar starting point, but time can be adjusted together with grind, ratio and roast.
The mesh holds back most grounds but not all oils or fine particles. That is why plunger coffee can feel fuller than paper-filter coffee.
Do not treat “four minutes” or one ratio as a law. The goal is a repeatable starting point you can change deliberately.
You: Hi, I use a coffee plunger at home. Could you grind this bag for a plunger, please?
Staff: Sure. How big is your plunger?
You: About one litre. How much coffee do you recommend?
Staff: I’d start around sixty grams per litre and adjust from there.
You: Great, thanks. I like something smooth and chocolatey.
Notice how the conversation joins coffee knowledge with brewing skills: you explain the brewing method, then the taste preference. That gives the staff far more useful information than simply saying “I want strong coffee.”
A mesh filter allows more oils and very small particles into the cup than many paper-filter methods. Learners may hear words such as body, texture, sediment and full-bodied.
If the last sip has a little sediment, that does not automatically mean the coffee was made incorrectly. It can be a normal feature of this method.
Try a little more coffee, a finer grind, or more contact time—but change one variable first.
Try a little less coffee, coarser grinding or shorter contact. Also consider the roast and bean itself.
The grind may be too fine or there may be too many fine particles. Ask: “Is this grind too fine for a plunger?”
Plunger coffee is ordinary home and office coffee in Australia, not a “less real” version of café espresso. Knowing both systems helps learners participate in work kitchens, share houses and family homes as well as cafés.

At home or in a shop, say “coffee plunger” aloud and use it in one full sentence. If you buy coffee, explain the brewer before asking for the grind: “I use a coffee plunger at home. Could you grind this for that, please?”
