“Grammar is the logic of speech, even as logic is the grammar of reason”

– R.C. Trench

Grammar is a really important lesson in an individual’s life as it gives your thoughts a structure to build upon and an understanding to be delivered to others. To improve one’ s grammar here are some steps that need to be followed:

STEP 1: BREAK THE MYTHS

1. There is NO “GOOD” or “BAD” Language

Linguistics or language specialists never consider a language to be good or bad. However, there can be two forms of it- standardized and non-standardized. The former one is more prestigious and is considered to be appropriate in professional settings, while the latter one too has its own internal logic and structure.

Example: using the word taked as the past tense of verb take demonstrates that a person carries the logic of ed as past tense rather than him having a bad grammar.

2. Grammar is Primary and Meaning is Secondary

Often people hold the view that the primary goal while using English language is to master grammar. Well, it is not so! Grammar and meaning goe hand in hand. You can’t overlook either of the two. As without grammar sentence formation can’t take place and without having any meaning attached to it, a sentence will lose its mere essence.

3. Once You Cover a Grammar Point, it is Learned

Grammar is a skill to learn and like any other skill it too calls for rigorous practice. You simply cannot just read and learn grammar. To learn a grammar point it is important to study it, practice it and then review it constantly to internalize it.

STEP 2: KNOW THE BASICS

Once you break these myths in your head you can gear up to understand the basics of grammar. Here is a list of basics that are crucial to comprehend:

1. Structure of a Phrase:

` These are the words that make up the language. There are nine parts of a phrase here is a brief on them.

  • Noun: These are the building blocks of sentences which are often referred to as naming words. There are four types of noun- common nouns, proper noun, collective noun, and abstract noun.
  • Verb: This part of speech tells about an action or a state. It has four types- action transitive, action intransitive, no-action to be and no-action linking.
  • Adjectives: Words that describes and classifies a noun are called adjectives. It has three types- descriptive, demonstrative, and quantitative.
  • Determiners: These are the words that come before a noun phrase and tells whether a noun phrase is specific or general. Majorly there are six types of determiners- articles, possessives, demonstratives, numerals, ordinals, and quantifiers.
  • Adverbs: Words that tells us more about a verb, an adjective or another adverb. There can be five such forms of it-time, manner, degree, place, and frequency.
  • Prepositions: The word or set of words that indicates a location or some other relationship between a noun or pronoun and other parts of the sentences are known as prepositions. It can be divided into six types- time, place, direction, agent, instruments, and phrases.
  • Conjunctions: It acts as a glue that holds words, phrases, and clauses together. There are three types of conjunctions- coordinating, subordinating, and correlative.
  • Interjections: These are the words used to express strong feeling or sudden emotion. It includes words like- hurray, wow, etc.
  • Pronouns: These are the words that replace a noun in the sentence. It is divided into six parts- personal, demonstrative, interrogative, indefinite, possessive, and reciprocal.

2. Recognize points of view

In English grammar, there can be three points of view and each of the three can either be singular or plural.

Using them wisely and as per the requirements is important.

3. Using Proper Word Order

Structure of a sentence is very important part of grammar, as it has the power to break or make your sentence. The basic order is that of S-V-O, where S stands for a subject, V stands for a verb and O stands for an object. If other parts of phrases are added to the sentence, the order is modified. In general, articles come before adjectives and adjectives come before the noun.

4. Punctuation

“Proper punctuation is both, the sign and the cause of clear thinking.”

Punctuation is very crucial to grammar as they depict the structure of a sentence and the way it is suppose to be read. Here is an infographic that provides details about various types of punctuation and their uses.

STEP 3: TIPS TO FOLLOW

1. Read

The more that you read the more things you will know. Reading is the prescribed solution to half of the problems that you face in life. As reading liberates your soul and teaches you something worthy.

To improve your grammar you should first start reading. As when you read you learn the following important things:

  • Learn Words: As you read you learn new words. Now it is your task to look into its meaning and usage.

Example: the usage of word sad

I am sad today. (emotion directed towards self)

I feel sad for you. (emotion directed towards others)

It is sad to hear that. (adjective attached to a verb)

  • Form Sentences: The second learning that reading has to offer you is that of forming a sentence. This involves following the right structure of the sentence, using punctuation at the right place, etc.
  • Compose paragraph: Once you learn to form sentences you can further work on forming paragraphs. By reading you learn how to start a paragraph, ways to end it and when to start a new one.

2. Learn with some fun

As mentioned earlier, reading alone cannot improve an individual’s grammar, learning a concept is also a crucial step. Here are some fun ways to learn what you read about:

  • As you learn a new word don’t forget to learn at least one antonym and one synonymy attached with it.

Example: If you learn the word “easy”, learn a synonym say “simple” and an antonym say, “complicated” linked with it.

  • Try and format one sentence in various ways.

Example: I like to eat ice-cream.

Ice-cream is my favorite dessert.

  • Maintain a Journal as this might help you look back immediately to a concept that needs an insight.

3. Be Tech Smart

Nowadays there are various applications that are available online which offer you grammar lessons and also checks grammar mistakes in your written work. Therefore, you can make use of these applications to see where you are lacking and can further work upon these areas.

4. Practice

Practice does make perfect. To transform a habit into a lifestyle it needs practice. Therefore, to use grammar effectively, you have to practice a lot of it. There is no stopping point attached to it. As you learn a word try and use it again and again, if you learn to form sentences, form different sentences again and again because again is practice and practice is improvement.

STEP 4: IMPORTANT RULES

What makes grammar really technical is the list of rules that have to be learned, recalled and used. Here is a quick rule book with examples that might help.

With all that said and mentioned the final tip to improve your English grammar is- Self Motivation. Until and unless you are motivated at a personal level, you can’t brush upon your skills. Therefore pull that notebook and pen and start working upon your grammar skills.

Good luck.!
