  • The flower is really beautiful. (makes/expresses and opinion)
  • I want to be a good writer. (makes a statement)
  • My friend is a really good writer. (makes/expresses an opinion)

 

 

What is an Imperative sentence?

 

An imperative sentence gives a command or makes a request. It also ends with a period(Exception: sometimes it ends with an exclamation mark).

 

Examples:

 

  • Please give me a glass of water. (makes a request)
  • Get out of the room. (gives a command)
  • Please sit down. (makes a request)
  • I need you to sit down now! (it is a request but expresses something explanation)

 

 

What is an Interrogative sentence?

 

An interrogative sentence asks a question. This type of sentence usually begins with who, what, where, when, why, how, or do, and it ends with a question mark. (These types of sentences also can be made by putting the verb before the subject or in front of the sentence.)

 

Examples:

 

  • What is your name? (WH questions)
  • Where is your house? (WH questions)
  • Do you know what the weather will be tomorrow? (starts with “do”)
  • Was he going to school? (putting the verb in front of the sentence)

 

 

What is an exclamatory sentence?

 

An exclamatory sentence is a sentence that expresses great emotion such as excitement, surprise, happiness and anger, and ends with an exclamation point. This types of sentences can be start with an interjection(exclamation word) like hurrah, alas, ah, oh etc.

 

Examples:

 

  • What a lovely flower!
  • Thank you, Sheldon!
  • Wow, I really love you! ( there is used an interjection-” wow”)
  • Hurrah, we have won the match!/ Hurrah! we have won the match. (the exclamation mark can be put after the exclamation word(hurrah) or at the end of the sentence)
  • Alas! we have lost the match.
  • It is too dangerous to climb that mountain! (expresses the emotion of fear)
