I am not an educator, or formally trained teacher, but I will tell you how I did it.

It worked for me, so it may just work for you. Of course I do not claim my English is a native level, but it serves me well.

This method will make you a lousy interpreter, but you will feel that wonderful ‘click’ in your brain, when you switch to another language. What I mean, your brain will not be translating your native language to a new one as you speak, it will be serving you internally your new language in a natural way.

When you will talk about house, you will picture a house in your head and new language words just pop in ready to be used.

Best Ways to Practice Speaking English step 1:

This is the nasty one of all, but it is a foundation.

You must understand the structure of English tenses, especially if your native language works differently, which is most likely the case. Here is something that may help:

Best Ways to Practice Speaking English step 2:

Now, we move to vocabulary – a set of words you need.

I will split it into a few ways, you can use to acquire/learn words.

They are not exclusive, but can work in parallel.

way 1: memorize them

Blah, terrible way. I never did use it. Despite that, I do acceptably well.

way 2: read books

Get a book from genre you like and get on with it.

Do not loose heart – it will be hard at first.

However, it will not be so at all times.

Learning process does not resemble this:

As you go, you learn at a faster rate, so it looks more like this:

So, all you have to do, is to persevere.

I read my first book almost 4 months. I had full translation in between lines.

Second one, I read within a couple of weeks.

Third one was a matter of a one, long night.

As time went by, for every word I translated, my brain picked up one to several from context.

The more I read, the more I understood – and that understanding seemingly came out of nowhere (context).

You see, your brain is a ‘smart fella’ and does a lot of work in background.

All you have to do, is to create proper environment, give your brain an opportunity.

This background learning brings us to another way.

way 3: listen

You could watch movies in original, but there is a better way, to employ your brain back burner learning powers.

Turn on your radio, find a station in English, tune in (e.g. online), lower the volume, so it does not bother you with whatever you are doing, but is clearly heard and go about what you are doing.

You’d be surprised, how many words, phrases etc. your busy body brain picks up.

At first, it will be gibberish, but give it time – keep in mind that second graph above.

step 3:

You have to speak, to permanently embed your new language in your memory banks.

And I do mean permanently.

At some point I learned Russian.

I was good at it, but then I just somehow stopped using it.

I suddenly needed that (work related) some 20 years later (this just show my age). It took me 2 weeks to refresh my knowledge to a comfortable conversational level with pretty comfortable reading/writing as well.

So, it is just like riding a bike, you never forget – but you have to embed it and for that you have to speak.

Best way is to actually move to a country, where language is used.

Another way is to find some native speaker, locally or online.

If above does not work, talk to yourself.

Get some topic and talk about it.

Do not worry about ‘funny’ pronunciation – no one hears you.

Record yourself and listen.

YouTube is full of proper pronunciations.

Be persistent.

If you start language learning process, never stop before your new language is embedded. If you stop, you have to pretty much start from the beginning.

You do not need to spend hours a day, however you need to continue bombarding your brain with new language daily!

Do not cut yourself any slack here.

You start it, you have to spend at least one half hour daily, or more at it.

Keep doing that until you are comfortable with your new language.

Give it time.

Do not expect to be fluent speaker in a week or a month.

Just take it day at the time and keep at it – remember graph #2, one day you just wake up (literally) and realize, that you got it.

I tested that method on more than one language … and it worked for me.

Will it work for you?

You have to try it to find out.

Just do not bother, if you cannot force yourself to be persistent and stubborn – for months, if needs be.

If you cannot be persistent, stick to memorizing words, as my method will be a colossal waste of time for you.

Good luck.
