Hi,

This is a popular question!

I understand that many English learners simply cant attend classes and would like some information to help then develop their spoken English without classes. So I’m going to provide you with hopefully the answer you’re looking for.

There are many ways so I’m going to highlight a few for you. I can only recommend that you apply them and see how they work for you.

Absorb as much English material as you can. You should constantly be seeking new and relevant English materials like podcasts, videos, articles etc on your favourite topics. There are millions online that you can use. This is crucial as it provides you with the main language in-put that you will ultimately use in your speaking.

Try and learn more about English pronunciation as this is also a huge part of spoken English. Actually this is often overlooked in most English classes, so it’s actually better if you’re doing this by yourself. I have an article here that provides a complete guide to improving your English pronunciation. (please note I’m British so the rules concern British pronunciation)

A Guide to perfect English Pronunciation

Take as many opportunities as you can to speak in English, Contrary to what you might think there are lots of ways you can practice speaking alone.

Here are some of my suggestions and I recommend you give them try.

Read out loud

A fantastic speaking activity you can do from the comfort of your own home ALONE is to read out loud!

Whenever, you read anything in English, read out loud; it could be a book, an article a social media post.

START RIGHT NOW: Try READING THIS answer out loud!

When you read out loud you’re using your mouth muscles to produce English sounds. When you speak in your own language you use different mouth muscles to when you speak in English so this is why it’s important to practice.

This activity is very easy and will make a difference to your speaking!

Speak about what you are doing

When you are doing things around the home; cleaning, making dinner, doing the gardening etc.

For example;

“I’m making lunch for my family”, “I’m cutting the vegetables”, “I’m pouring the water into the pan”, “I’m putting it on the table”….by doing this you are re-using vocabulary, pronouncing words and connecting your ideas together.” I’m making lunch for my family”, “I’m cutting the vegetables”, “I’m pouring the water into the pan”, “I’m putting it on the table”….by doing this you are re-using vocabulary, pronouncing words and connecting your ideas together.

Talk about past or future events

Another similar activity to the one above is; talk about past events or future events…

For example;

What you did at the weekend? or what you’re are going to do? This is a great way to practice using and practising different grammar structure .

Describe images

A great activity is to describe images. This is a superb way to start using different descriptive vocabulary.

All you need to do is; when you see an image; speak about it and describe in detail what you can see, if there are people in the picture, what are they doing? You can also speculate using modal verbs. This activity is used in many different English examinations as it really does test your speaking skills.

So more suggestions for improving speaking without classes is to learn and use more advanced English vocabulary. If you’re going t follow my first piece of advice then you will no doubt find lots of new words and phrases. The idea is not to ignore them but to make an effort to record and use them. Doing this will certainly help you acquire much more vocabulary than you would In an English class. Your job is to use them and remember them.

I feel that if take the time and put my suggestions into practice it will go along way to improving your spoken English without the need for regular classes.

I hope you find this answer useful, if so please upvote my answer and share it on your favourite social channel.

Thanks! Becky

Get Fluent In English With 4 Tricks Set a goal and create a learning strategy

Save & Exit

Do this: write down your English-learning goal and when you want to achieve this. Here is a template: By _______ I want to reach a _____ level of English.

Let’s say you currently have a B1 level of English.

Great! This is a good level to have. However, your goal should be to have a higher level by a certain date.

If you make it unrealistic, you’ll soon give up. If you make it too easy, you won’t see any progress and that isn’t exciting. Again, you’ll give up.

Get Fluent In English With 4 Tricks Narrate Your Day In English Every Day

Delivery is completely different than knowledge. You speak once every year than you think you should be fluent. Far from it. You obtained the knowledge. Fine, but your brain didn’t learn to automate the activity of speaking in English. It is still consciously searching for words, tracking the historical use of those words in their context, and then picking up what is most suitable. You may have excellent writing skills but that doesn’t translate to speaking. A great example of this is academicians. Most foreign academicians are pretty advanced when it comes to reading and writing in English but very basic at speaking.

Memorize examples with vocabulary

Don’t just memorize lists of words. Make sure to include examples, too. If you are using flashcards, write a whole sentence on each card so you know how to use the words in context. Make the examples as memorable as possible with a funny story or use something related to your life to help them stick in your mind.

Read, Listen, and Write A lot

First of all read a lot. Read local communities like Reddit, HN (here), slashdot, etc. This will make you familiar with the daily language.

Second, listen a lot. Watch movies with original sound and English subtitles. Try to understand, try to make sense of it. If you listen English songs, try to listen a little more attentive.

Then write a lot. Try to take your notes in English. Comment your code in English. Try to comment more into stories or forums around the world.

These three will sharpen you in daily English. You’ll become more familiar. Becoming fluent becomes after becoming familiar. As everyone said, also read books, novels in English and take notes, however, some books’ vocabulary may be drastically different from others (e.g., Both Hyperion Cantos and Ready Player One are SciFi novels, but latter one has a much more accessible English than the former).
