What Is the Past Perfect Tense? (with Examples)
Past perfect tense describes a completed action. Past perfect describes a past event that has already been completed.
For example:
- Elza had baked a cake before Swe arrived.
- May had painted the fence before Farah had a chance to speak to them.
The past perfect tense is formed: “had” + [past participle]
For example:
- Phon had eaten.
- Rose had washed.
Past perfect tense questions are indicated by inverting the subject and had. Negatives are made with not.
Statement: Sokun had studied Chinese before he moved to China.
Question: Had Sokun studied Chinese before he moved to China.
Negative: Sokun had not studied Chinese before you moved to China.
So In the past perfect simple tense, we talk about a certain period of time (had + past participle). We can also use the past perfect tense to show the order of two past events. The past perfect shows the earlier action and the past simple shows the later action.
