Learn English word Accolade – English vocabulary tips:

  • The accolade is a ceremony to confer knighthood. It may take many forms, including the tapping of the flat side of a sword on the shoulders of a candidate or an embrace about the neck.[citation needed] In the first example, the “knight-elect” kneels in front of the monarch on a knighting-stool. First, the monarch lays the side of the sword’s blade onto the accolade’s right shoulder. The monarch then raises the sword gently just up over the apprentice’s head and places it on his left shoulder. The new knight then stands up, and the king or queen presents him with the insignia of his new order. Contrary to popular belief, the phrase “Arise, Sir …” is not used. – (Thank you, wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.)
  • Early 17th century: from French, from Provençal acolada, literally ‘embrace around the neck (when bestowing knighthood)’, from Latin ad- ‘at, to’ + collum ‘neck’. – (Thank you, Oxford Dictionary, The World’s Most Trusted Dictionary Provider.)
  • Praise and approval. – (Thank you, Cambridge English Dictionary, The most popular dictionary and thesaurus for learners of English.)
  • If someone is given an accolade, something is done or said about them which shows how much people admire them. – (Thank you, Collins English Dictionary, Ideal dictionary for English word reference, plus thesaurus for expanding your word power.)
  • An honour given to someone for their work.  – (Thank you, Macmillan English Dictionary, Free English Dictionary and Thesaurus Online.)
  • Accolade was borrowed into English in the 16th century from French. The French noun in turn derives from the verb accoler, which means “to embrace,” and ultimately from the Latin term collum, meaning “neck.” (Collum is also an ancestor of the English word collar.) When it was first borrowed from French, accolade referred to a ceremonial embrace that once marked the conferring of knighthood. The term was later extended to any ceremony conferring knighthood (such as the more familiar tapping on the shoulders with the flat part of a sword’s blade), and eventually extended to honors or awards in general. – (Thank you,  Merriam-Webster, America’s most-trusted online dictionary.)
  • Accolade – A knight being honored with the tap of a sword-blade was the earliest form of accolade. Today, an accolade is more than a way to bestow knighthood, it is a form of praise or an award. – (Thank you, vocabulary.com, Vocabulary.com helps you learn new words, play games that improve your vocabulary, and explore language.)
  • Any award, honor, or laudatory notice; a light touch on the shoulder with the flat side of the sword or formerly by an embrace, done in the ceremony of conferring knighthood; the ceremony itself; Music. a brace joining several staves. Architecture; an archivolt or hood molding having more or less the form of an ogee arch; a decoration having more or less the form of an ogee arch, cut into a lintel or flat arch. – (Thank you, Dictionary.com, Dictionary.com is the world’s leading online source for English definitions, synonyms, word origins, and etymologies.)
