Fix your English Grammar
Hi! How are you? Hope you’re doing fine.
Your question is a valid one. If English is not your native language, then it is normal that you will struggle for a time, but I believe you can work it out. Every person who is trying to learn a new language experiences this kind of dilemma.
- 1 – Someone will ask you in English.
- 2 – You have the answer but you have to translate it in English before you respond.
- 3 – Now, you are being conscious on your English grammar.
- 4 – When you are about to say something, you stutter and sometimes, run out of words to say.
- 5 – This scenario repeats over and over again, thus, affecting your self-confidence.
Do this ring a bell to you?
Look, I want to confess something. I am not really good in English either. It is not my native language. I am a talkative person but when someone talks to me in English, I simply go away. It affects my confidence.
Then, one day, I realized I need to practice more if I want to improve my oral English. Here’s what I keep doing.
1) Lower your expectations. Accept the fact that you will make mistakes. And it’s ok. It’s part of the process. As long as you deliver your message and it was understood, you have successfully communicated in English.
2) Read a lot. I know that this may sound counterintuitive. But the more you expose yourself to books written in English, the more you familiarize with English language. Any material will do. It can be a book, a blogposts, a newspaper or a magazine. Any type that you want. Just make sure that the topic is within your interest so that you won’t get bored.
3) Write a lot. Write any random ideas in English. Whatever pops on your mind, write it down in English. Don’t worry about coming up with brillant ideas. Just write your thoughts. Make a journal if you want. Write something about your favorite movie or travel.
4) Write in Long Hand. In followup to number 3, make sure you write in longhand. Yes. Pen and paper. There is something magical about this. When you write in longhand, your brain is adapting. I got this advice from Gary Halbert. It works for me. Who knows, it might work for you.
5) Hand-copy others’ work. If you run out of ideas on what to write, then copy others’ work. Hand-copy a chapter of your favorite chapter or blogpost.
6) Do the above suggestions within 30 days. And I am pretty sure, your English will improve 10x. Research says that you can develop a habit or skill within that amount of time. No harm in trying.
One Final Bit of Advice
Language ability is a muscle. You need to train yourself so that your ‘English muscle’ will be developed. It may take time. But you know that it is worth it. Have a nice day ahead!
