QUESTION: What’s the secret to writing a successful Common App College essay that will land you a chance to get into a top 10 college?

The propose of the essay is to reveal something about yourself that isn’t evident from the stats on your transcript and your scores. This is true for every college requiring a personal statement.

Please, stop fretting about a “top school”.

True story: one of my clients applied to one of these allegedly illustrious colleges and was denied. He was devastated and her parents were furious although he was admitted to several universities that are well known in her field.

He complained to me about his choices because he “Wanted to go to a school where he could have close relationships with his professors”. When I told him that those relationships are nurtured by students who approach the faculty members, go to office hours, get to know profs as people he was surprised. Relationships are within the reach of everyone, not a perk of the name brand.

My student then said he needed to go to a school where he would be prepared to get a good job and make good money. I pointed out that this is also within his power. By doing research, writing for publication, presenting at a conference, joining a professor’s research team, networking, pursuing internships and summer jobs, he would prepare himself for grad school or his first job and become known to those who hire.

The young student replied “You mean there is no difference in where you go to school?” “Yes, I said. Now the responsibility for your education is on you and the school you attend isn’t a limitation or a magic wand.”

When you consider colleges, look for those that offer courses you want to take leading to a degree in something that is meaningful to you. Choose one that is affordable without excessive debt or the need to work more than 10 hours a week, Find a place where you feel comfortable and like the people you meet.

If you are looking for an intellectually stimulating environment, talk to students and faculty to evaluate their commitment to discovery and discussion. At any school or work place you will find your own group of like-minded people.

The name of the school on your diploma may get you an extra look when you apply for a job but it is only good for that first one. Employers look at your accomplishments where you interned or last worked.

FYI, grad schools accept students from well known and unknown undergraduate programs. They, too, look at what you’ve done. A graduate degree from a prestigious department is far more valuable than an undergraduate degree from the same place.

As I asked my student, “Why would you pine for a school that doesn’t want you when you can go to one that chose you?” Go where you’re presence is valued.
