Allow me to introduce you to a technique that necessitates no introduction in the arena of language training: immersion.
Immersion entails submerging oneself in the environment of the language one wishes to achieve proficiency in. Immersion trumps over all the other methods of language instruction in that it trains not only the conscious but also the subconscious. All you need to do is ensure that you cajole your mind into taking a heavy dose of the language daily knowingly or unknowingly. How do you do that ? Observe the following steps/suggestions :
1 Change your viewing habits and switch to watching English entertainment such as TV series, songs, movies and the like.
With no intent to condone piracy, I state the obvious here that movies and TV series aren’t difficult to get your hands on. Start with something breezy and more conversational such as the very popular F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Consider each episode’s 22–25 min. long runtime as a pill (if you will 🙂 )
Make sure you have subtitles running to avoid any unnecessary frustration born off accent nuances. Take two to three pills (episodes) a day, preferably one with each meal (if squeezing out time is an issue). The constant listening will start caching in your subconscious. Before long, you’ll become cognisant of the wonder of immersion kicking in. You may experience positive symptoms such as the echoing of thoughts in English instead of the native tongue. I was an extreme instance in my adolescence when even the conversations in my dreams migrated to english from my native tongue! Thanks to a substantial daily dose of Cartoon Network (back then, we only had it in English) and Star World (Star Plus back then, before it turned into the spokesperson of domestic trifles it is today! ) Later on, I did meet people for whom immersion had worked in the same fashion. Remember, listening is the key! The more English goes in , comes out quadrupled!
2 Start thinking in English
“Oh gosh! Do I utter English or just let it flow in my own vernacular?” Yeah, if you had a nickel for every time your mind told you that (you’d be rich, though not fluent 😀 haha!).
The mind is a ceaseless tract of loquacity. To put it simply, it never shuts the hell up!
But hark! Use this quality of the mind being a blabber-mouth to your advantage. Alright, you’re a bit concerned about the wrong grammar leaving your lips, that’s understandable. But what’s keeping you from thinking your random, unceasing thoughts in English ? Who’s listening there? What’s the fear? What gets?
Start with “Think I left my keys in my room”, “Hmm..now what colour looks best on her?”, “Hey, isn’t that him?” etc.
And that’s just you talking to your mind. You’d be surprised how fluent you and your thoughts can be when in the absence of that callous killer of hopes ‘fear’!
3 Listening is the key – I repeat my sentiment from the first point that listening is the pivotal exercise in speaking a language fluently. I may face some dissension from readers here when I say that I don’t see reading doing much for fluency. It may do a lot in the way of vocabulary, expression and the overall nurturing of the intellect, but for the oral execution of language, not so much! All it does is render a bilingual’s spoken language more formal, being sourced from newspapers, journals etc.
4 Alternatively, you may also reinforce your learning by brining in some tech. Present day language instruction software are also potent teachers for self-learners. I personally use Rosetta Stone with my students. Helps break the ice and embrace the language with more amiability.
I’ll leave you here with best wishes and an appeal to vest faith in the method. I speak out of first hand experience as an immersion-taught bilingual as well as second hand experience as a language trainer. The method has been infallible in both the settings.
