Fix your English Grammar
According to an Oxford dictionary, the word ‘grammar’ is defined as ‘the rules in a language for changing the form of words and joining them into sentences’.
To learn grammar more effectively, understanding the rules is the first step. After you have understood the rules, apply them. Of course it’s easier said than done, since there are lots of grammar rules and quite a few to consider when forming a sentence. Besides understanding the rules, you also need to be familiar with the various forms of words.
Let’s take the example of the verb ‘improve’:
Improve (present tense / base form & plural form of the verb)
Improves (present tense / singular form)
Improving (present participle)
Improved (past tense)
Improved (past participle tense)
Improvement (noun)
Improved (adjective)
As you can see, there are quite a few forms of the verb. If you are unfamiliar with its forms, memorizing them is an effective way to familiarize yourself with them. You may have also noticed that the spelling for its past tense, past participle and adjective form is similar but used in different situations.
As tenses are involved in most cases, you need to have a good knowledge of all the 12 tenses as well. In my experience as an English tutor, students who do not have a thorough understanding of the tenses tend to mix them up and apply them wrongly. A sound knowledge allows you to use the right tense when the need arises.
Examples:
I visit the library once a week.
My mother visits the market every Sunday.
The 2 sentences are in the present tense because they show actions which are done habitually or regularly. (Note the subject-verb agreement.) So, you know what tense should be used for actions of such nature.
Another example:
Jeremy will visit his grandparents next month.
The sentence is in the simple future tense as it shows a future action. The tense is formed by combining the model verb ‘will’ and the base form of the verb ‘visit’.
‘will’ (modal verb) + ‘visit’ (verb) = will visit (simple future tense)
One more example:
My sister has written an essay.
The present prefect tense is used because it shows an action that has completed but the time of completion is not given. The tense is formed by combining the auxiliary verb ‘has’ and the past participle of the verb ‘write’ – ‘written’.
‘has’ (auxiliary verb) + ‘written’ (past participle of ‘write’) = has written (present perfect tense)
Therefore, the understanding of grammar rules is extremely important to learn them more effectively. With the knowledge that you have learnt, learn to apply them by doing exercises. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes – you learn from your mistakes and the more you learn, the better you are.
Another way to help you learn grammar more effectively is through reading. If you read extensively, you tend to get an idea how standard English should be and avoid errors. In other words, reading enables you to better understand grammar rules and it facilitates the English-learning process. It even helps to expedite the process.
To give you an idea how reading helps, try filling in the blank in the sentence below using the right form of the verb in brackets:
Marie is _________ (wash) the dishes now.
If you read extensively, you know that the right answer is reading. The reason is that reading helps to inculcate the correct language habits in you. You are aware that the answer can’t be wash, washes or washed, even if you have no idea what the present continuous tense is. The sentence just don’t sound right when the wrong forms are used to fill in the blank. Learning grammar tells you why the answer is ‘washing’. It tells you that the sentence is in the present continuous tense, how it is formed and when to use it.

I hope that helps.
