How does gender role impact our understanding of public spaces?
You see that the outdoor is the domain of men that men go out, men work, men are the hunters, men are the gathers, men are the providers of their family.
We think that women are restricted the household, women are associated with household chores with cooking and cleaning and taking care of the family and in doing so we also distinguish the outdoors and indoors.
We say men have the right to go outside and women should stay at home. These stereotypes are very much real and prevalent. When we build the urban infrastructure we are keeping in mind that more men spend time outdoor and women at indoor. And these design choices are consciously made and build upon gender stereotypes but then they also reinforce the same gender stereotypes.
They make indoor hostile to women and they ensure implicitly that women do not spend enough time outdoors. Despite several decades of feminist scholarship dominate perspective within the “the right of city” literature pay little attention to how “rights” are gendered.

When I was just 11 years old, I went to take my grandfather pension and their people looked at me and bothered how a girl child was sent to carry this amount of money. So one of them followed me to my house to ask this to my family whether it is in their knowledge that a girl child should not be given such work of outdoor. He got a satisfying answer from my aunt and left.
Now after knowing about gender space, I learned why he followed me that day. The gender space is negotiated and practiced in everyday life. There are timing when women are not found outdoor or restricted to move out, certain public space lacks the presence of women due to male dominating society.
